Dream of Woman, Dream of Land
Jean-Louis Poitevin
Visual Poetry, the new series by Kwon, Hyun Jin brings us to the familiar, but strange world. Whenever facing the flows of colors and light, but deep waves drawn by her, it is inevitable to be led by the irresistible and powerful waves. The power in her works is to make us feel the deep harmony between the world and ourselves through continuous changes.
Each work contains memories of her own. As the moments pass, the world around her and the colors of her spirit are changing. How could we grab the vanishing moments? Kwon, Hyun Jin answers it with paintings. This is the ambition of painters for centuries. The great tradition of paintings from impressionist painters to abstractionists focusing on the U.S. discovered how to capture vitality of life within free expressive methods. She also follows such tradition of paintings.
Just like a drunk boast on the ocean, she lets the brush flow on the canvas. Through this, she is drawing forms which are unstable, but very implicative and attractive. When jumping in the universe with various colors without hesitation, Kwon Hyun Jin does not show her world to us. The unique mixture of Acrylic painting and the conjugated substance as a kind of varnish show in her works as materials themselves, which is the mirror for us from her.
Each work approaches each of us as an absolutely free dimension of abstraction. Even though works are a mirror, they are not the mirror that reflects us, but the one reflecting our lively breathing hopes, dreams, secrets and emotions. Whenever seeing her works, we feel like that we travel into the world welcoming us, or we just discover a new angle of the land. As the possible combinations of colors are left to the endless flow, we are engaged in endless creation of the world and expansion of our own identities.
Kwon, Hyun Jin’s works are not only the captures of the experiential moments, but also showing a layer of memories we have. She is directly telling us something without describing detailed stories to us because her works create the memories of the moments when the world and ourselves were created within the same movement. From the play of colors in Kwon, Hyun Jin’s works, we face a dreaming woman who discovers herself while finding ourselves who are united in the dream of land.
